Our First Outreach Day

The first outreach we did was in Uctuyacu, a small village outside of Recuay. The summer missionaries kept the kids busy outside while we spoke with some of the ladies about what the Bible says about parenting and leading by Christian example within the home. After we were finished talking, we asked if any of the women had any questions. One of the ladies asked if it was wrong for her to pray to a picture she had of Christ crucified on the cross. This caught us all off guard, but it's almost as if God led Gloria and Will with just the right words to say. They explained to the young mother that God cannot be found in a painting, nor should it be worshiped as a representation of Christ or God. The words they used to instruct and guide her seemed to flow naturally ~ at least to me. They told her to keep the painting, look at it daily and let it remind her of what Christ sacrificed for our sins. When we pray, we are to go directly to God, not a painting. You could tell by the look on her face that she understood. Talk about a GOD thing!
